I think that because dark magic slowly corrupts the user they would begin to hear voices. I mean, using this stuff is basically allowing the nightmare(what created nightmare moon) free access to your head, and considering how many others have went the same route as Penny, I think it’s safe to say once it has it’s grip on you it’s not letting go, and so there would always be the voice in the back of their head, manipulating their decisions. Dark magic is incredibly addicting, and Penny isn’t stopping until she’s learned and documented all she can. She doesn’t even realize she’s being corrupted.
